Sustainable Leadership
Ethstat has been at the cutting edge of sustainability since we started. Between them, our founders have over sixty years’ experience of environmental management and campaigning.
Making Change Since 2004
Our early highlights include founding the first carbon neutral office supplies company in 2004, removing chlorine from our supply chain in 2005 and publishing an analysis of what would later be called Scope 3 emissions in 2008. More recent successes have included removing 8.9 million single use plastics from our supply chain and developing an affordable coffee brand that has 77% less carbon than some of our mainstream counterparts.
One Planet
As our understanding of planetary systems evolves, the connection between environmental degradation, social justice, and public health becomes increasingly clear. We know that areas such as soil degradation from overuse of chemical fertilisers, deforestation, changes in land use and the explosion in plastic use are real-world issues with human health consequences.
If human activity is causing problems, we can choose differently.
At Ethstat, we look beyond carbon and into the total environmental impact of a product or service. We protect our customers’ reputation and our own by making better ethical choices. It’s the reason why over 80% of our hamper food products are certified organic. It’s why our coffee is shade-grown organic, and it’s why we prioritise products that have been made as close to the point of consumption as possible.
One People
Our changing climate affects everyone, but not equally. The most vulnerable and least able to adapt are often those who suffer the most. Transitioning to a regenerative economy from fossil fuels impacts us all, but the benefits rarely reach the most disadvantaged, and they’re most at risk of being left behind.
If we are to be ethical and environmental, we believe we must have a just transition.
That means investing in the education and training of those furthest from the job market, so no one is left behind. In 2010 we co-authored an Early Day Motion proposed by the late Malcolm Wicks to ask the government to invest in a green economy for working people. Since then, Ethstat has delivered over 95,000 hours of purposeful development and training, giving people the chance to access work and the opportunities that come with it.
